ICELDA bursary holder completes the MA cum laude

Colleen du PlessisColleen du Plessis, newly appointed junior lecturer in the Department of English of the University of the Free State, has just heard that she has obtained a distinction for her master’s dissertation on The design, refinement and reception of a test of academic literacy for postgraduate students. The study was done to refine and develop a further version of ICELDA’s test for postgraduate students, TALPS. One of the external examiners remarks that by dealing with all important aspects of test design she gives a comprehensive account of more than just test development, and the other praises her writing as “fluent… and articulate… a pleasure to read… meticulously prepared, closely edited and carefully crafted.” Her supervisor, Albert Weideman, ICELDA’s CEO, remarks that one “seldom encounters this mature level of understanding of a field and a topic in a master’s dissertation,” and that the dissertation constitutes an impressive prelude to her doctoral studies.
