Fairness in language testing in the spotlight
At the invitation of the dean of the School of Humanities and Social Sciences of Nanyang Technological University, Prof. Alan Chan, ICELDA CEO Albert Weideman presented a “Brown bag seminar” there on 30 May. He spoke on how our conceptualisation of academic literacy interventions has changed. The invitation was initiated by Kenneth Ong of their Language and Communication Centre, who is also a research associate of Prof. Weideman in the Department of Linguistics and Language Practice at the University of the Free State. While in Singapore, Albert Weideman was also invited to participate in a colloquium on “Fairness in language testing” chaired by Antony Kunnan. Kunnan is an international expert on this theme. Information presented on ICELDA’s Umalusi Home Languages Project, which is now in its second phase, met with very favourable comment.
