Post-entry language assessments to be discussed at AAAL 2014
John Read (University of Auckland), past president of the International Language Testing Association (ILTA), has put together a colloquium on Exploring Post-admission Language Assessments in Universities Internationally for the upcoming conference of the American Association for Applied Linguistics (AAAL). With John Norris (Georgetown University) as discussant, the colloquium will include participants from all over: New Zealand, Canada, the US, Oman and South Africa. ICELDA CEO Albert Weideman will contribute a paper based on his work and that of ICELDA associates Anna Pot (Rijksuniversiteit Groningen) and Rebecca Patterson (Stellenbosch). His presentation will deal with the topic “Construct refinement in tests of academic literacy”, a first draft of which is available here. ICELDA’s initial tests were post-entry assessments of the ability to handle academic discourse. Some more refined versions of its tests are now used not only for placement on appropriate language development courses (after entry), but also, in conjunction with other criteria, for student selection.
