Diagnostic information of postgraduate test tapped
TALPS, ICELDA’s test for postgraduate students, has just been probed and analyzed for the diagnostic information it may yield. In an article entitled Diagnosing academic language ability: An analysis of the Test of Academic Literacy for Postgraduate Students that has appeared in the prestigious scholarly journal Language Matters, Anna Pot and Albert Weideman set out how one may employ the results of this test in order to inform both courses that support academic literacy development at this level, and the future design of such tests.
They conclude that students primarily struggle with the structuring of arguments. The analysis builds on Anna Pot’s MA dissertation at the Rijksuniversiteit Groningen, a course for which she achieved a summa cum laude, as well as on earlier work undertaken by ICELDA associate Rebecca Patterson.
