Project associate wins prize to speak at BELTA conference
Marilize Pretorius, ICELDA project associate, has won the prize for the best poster at the Learner Autonomy Special Interest Group (LASIG) conference hosted by the University of Antwerp. Her title was “Metacognitive awareness raising in language-discordant nurse-patient communication”. Marilize demonstrated how learner autonomy in language learning depends on nursing professionals’ metacognitive awareness of their learning needs, as well as on designing material and activities based on meaningful, authentic and relevant content. By increasing learner motivation and engagement in the learning process, one is able to increase learner autonomy. Her prize is a slot to speak at the Belgian English Language Teachers’ Association (BELTA) conference to be held in Brussels on 23 April. Marilize, a holder of the prestigious EUROSA scholarship, is currently doing a PhD at the University of Antwerp under the supervision of Prof. Kris Van de Poel.
